Top Ways to Stay Healthy in Arizona’s Hot Summers

By Luna Acupuncture

Arizona summers are hot—really hot! When it’s over 100 degrees, our bodies have to work extra hard to stay cool. This heat can raise your heart rate, cause low blood pressure, and lead to headaches and dizziness from dehydration. That’s why it’s important to take special care of your body during the summer.

Here are the top 3 ways to protect your health and feel your best—even in the heat!

💧 1. Stay Hydrated and Use Electrolytes

Why it matters: When we sweat, we lose water and important minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Without these, you might feel tired, dizzy, or get muscle cramps.

  • Drink water all day, not just when you’re thirsty.
  • Add electrolyte powders or tablets to your water if you’re sweating a lot. I love LMNT. Ultima is a great low sodium alternative.
  • Eat high-water fruits and veggies like:
    • Watermelon (92% water)
    • Cucumbers (96% water)
    • Strawberries
    • Celery
    • Lettuce and spinach
    • Hibiscus tea – delicious!

These foods cool your body and give you extra hydration naturally!

☀️ 2. Avoid the Heat — Exercise Early or Swim

Why it matters: Too much heat can make you feel faint, give you heat rash, or even lead to heat stroke, which is very serious.

  • Do outside activities like walking or running at 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Choose swimming instead of hiking in the heat.
  • Stay indoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing to keep your body cooler.

🧴 3. Get Safe Sun and Protect Your Skin

Why it matters: Your skin needs sunshine to make Vitamin D, which helps your bones, mood, and immune system. But too much sun can cause burns, skin damage, and even skin cancer.

  • Use a free app like D-minder to track safe sun exposure.
  • Get 10–20 minutes of sunlight on your arms and face before 9 a.m.
  • Wear hats, sunglasses, and mineral-based sunscreen afterward.
  • Sunlight in the morning can help lower your risk of seasonal depression.

If you’re looking for clean alternatives for sunscreen a few of my favorites are listed in our Luna Acupuncture Fullscript store HERE

🌿 Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine: Your Summer Cooling Tool

If you’re feeling off-balance from the heat—like you’re tired, have heart palpitations, or feel restless at night—your body might be showing signs of internal heat.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help:

  • Clear excess heat from your body
  • Support healthy heart and lung function
  • Improve sleep, digestion, and mood
  • Calm symptoms like sweating, irritability, and fatigue

Many patients at Luna Acupuncture come in during the summer for help with heat exhaustion, headaches, and hot flashes. We use cooling points and customized care to help your body feel balanced again.

💛 Final Tip: Listen to Your Body

Your body gives you signs when it’s too hot: thirst, dizziness, faster heartbeat, or crankiness. Take breaks, rest in the shade, and come in for a summer wellness tune-up with acupuncture.

Stay cool and healthy this summer—your body will thank you!
