What is a session like?
Your first session will include a thorough intake to get to the root of your concerns. We’ll cover lifestyle and your medical history. You’ll also receive a gentle acupuncture treatment that may last 25 minutes or longer. While you rest on a warm table, the room is dimly lit with music or guided mediation playing, essential oils (upon request).
Does acupuncture hurt?
No, acupuncture does not hurt. The truth is that the sensation varies from one person to the next. Some people feel the initial insertion, but as you rest through your treatment you shouldn’t feel any sharp, burning or painful sensations. You may feel heaviness, warmth, tingling, and pulsing. Many people fall asleep during their treatment.
Pain and needle phobia are two major reasons people are concerned about acupuncture treatments. Please note that there are alternative options that do not require needle, such as acupressure, cupping, moxa, gua sha & more to meet your therapeutic needs.
Here’s a little fact. Did you know that about 18 acupuncture needles can fit into a hypodermic needle? They are hair-thin, filiform, one time used sterile needles.
How should I prepare for my treatments?
Please eat something light an hour prior to your treatment and hydrate. You may also wear loose comfortable clothing. Depending on your treatment plan, a gown may be provided.
Jewelry and watches will be removed during the treatment.
How many treatments will it take for my health concern?
Treatments vary from one person to the next. Factors that determine the length of your treatment plan will be discussed in full prior to your initial treatment. Questions to consider: Is this is an acute vs. chronic condition? Are you currently undergoing therapy or taking medications that may lengthening the healing time? Sessions can result in immediate results or take several treatments. Acute cases generally respond faster to treatment (6-12). Chronic treatments may take one to two treatments per week for several months. We will discuss your treatment plan in the first session.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture facilitates and rebalances the physiological processes of the body. Traditional Chinese medicine is thousands of years old. Prior to conventional medicine, physiological functions were associated with the natural aspects of our environment. Qi, blood, yin and yang are some of the definitive terms used to describe the processes and state of our body.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is a very safe therapy. Acupuncturists are certified in Clean Needle Technique (CNT) and have thousands of hours in clinical experience. Acupuncture needles are used once, and properly disposed of. Adverse reactions to treatment may include bruising and bleeding. By seeking out a practitioner that meets NCCAOM certifications, you can expect quality and safe care.
