A meta analysis of over 1,900 participants showed that acupuncture helps with IVF by increasing the live birth rate by 30% for those with a previously failed transfer. When compared to control groups, acupuncture increased pregnancy rates by 42%. In addition, the frequency of acupuncture regularity and pre and post transfer treatments improved pregnancy rates.
Acupuncture Increases Blood Flow to the Uterus and Reproductive Organs
How else does acupuncture helps with IVF? Acupuncture increases blood flow and circulation to the uterus and reproductive organs. By increasing blood flow, it improves uterine lining for transfer day as well as improves the ovarian function and follicle development.
In 2012 this study reviewed the effectiveness of acupuncture in increasing blood flow in the body. More specifically a study in 2009 showed electroacupuncture showed improvement in blood flow to the ovaries compared to the control group, thereby supporting follicle development.
Acupuncture Helps Reduce Uterine Contractions Post IVF Transfer
Acupuncture reduces uterine motility and contractions. In practice, we say “Calming the Uterus” to support embryo implantation and reducing discomfort from cramping.
